  • The Case for Language

    April 19th, 2023

When we were babies, it was difficult to hold an effective conversation. Of course, our needs were also basic. As we grew older, though, it became necessary to communicate with the big people in a more complex way, and thus we had to learn the language of the adults.

As with babies, whenever we enter a new situation, we know not much more than gibberish. And, just like babies, our progress depends on learning the language of our peers. Once we share the basics of the language, we can build and expand on it.

Change, therefore, should start with creating common understanding. When we know what we mean when we say anything, it can help us to get to our destination more effectively.

  • Emotional being

    April 13th, 2023

Of course we want to be rational, to weigh the cost and benefits of each option, and then taking the option with the maximum upside. And that works, many a time.

However, there’s still a place for emotions, and when we look at even our most rational choices, we might realize that, more often than not, our emotions influenced the decision we took. And that is ok.

We’re emotional beings, and being invested emotionally means we care about the outcome. And that’s why we care about the inputs and the process.

So, far from being the villain, our emotional being is the hero in making us human and driving the change we care about.

  • What works for you

    April 12th, 2023

What’s the most fun way to exercise?

Exercise, though necessary, can be a drag. Why sweat while you can be pristine, why waste a minute practicing when there’s a nice movie you can watch right now?

So, it’s a constant fight with the guilty conscience. To do, or not to do.

I have found that the best exercise is the one you do. Do what works for you, right now. Walk a few steps more if you’re a walker, and bundle it with a reward.

Step by step, you’ll be chopping away at the 1000 miles. Soon, you’ll be far enough on the journey that the journey will be the more automatic choice.

  • Doers Do

    April 11th, 2023

Of course, talent is necessary, but talent alone can only take you so far. When you combine talent with practice, the combination is what you owe to yourself. The joy of looking back and seeing that you went from the couch to competing, if only against your best of yesterday.

So take the moments, choose to do instead of not to do.

  • The joy of movement

    April 8th, 2023

Whenever I am conflicted between traveling and staying put, and I decide to travel instead of staying, I tend to enjoy it.

Similarly, getting started on a new project always involves a struggle. But I find that I learn more by embarking on the project than by staying put.

Thus, to move is to be human.
