  • If you didn’t record it, is it still a run?

    December 11th, 2023

What are your favorite physical activities or exercises?

I love running, and try to do it 3 to 4 times a week. I love it because it’s the one activity that stuck, and it’s easy to do at most places. Slap on your sneakers and off you go, out the door and away from everything.

Most of my runs are without music or any other audio, and it’s the only time I really get to be on my own. The only tech I take along is my trusted Garmin watch.

Recently, though, I had the horror of realizing, just as I was about to start pounding the pavements, that my watch was low on juice. Oh boy, do I run the unrecorded run, or run only until the battery dies, or is it not a run if it’s not recorded?

Of course you must run, my brain says to me. People have been running for millennia without a watch to tell them how far they went and what their heart rate was. Rational though that thought is, it remained a mental struggle as I started off on the journey.

It turned out the battery life was long enough to outlast my planned run, but the question still remains, and now I have increased awareness of the charger.

  • Nothing

    December 6th, 2023

What is one thing you would change about yourself?

I thought this is part of me, as I type this while working. But I do realize that I may be more effective without multitasking. But it is also what makes me who I am. I choose to change nothing.

  • More than a run

    November 20th, 2023

Yes, it’s exercise, but it also serves as more. As I pound the streets, I get a chance to be without a mobile device for roughly an hour.

The break allows me to think, and mull things over, although overthinking does make me slower.

It’s a few moments where I tolerate my strengths and weaknesses, where I will myself on, and I can set the pace to finish, not to be finished by the race.

  • Prioritizing Pedestrian Safety: Enhancing Windhoek’s Streets

    October 23rd, 2023

As I jogged through the streets of Windhoek this morning, I couldn’t help but draw a stark contrast between the city’s streets and my recent visit to Japan. The most noticeable difference was the relative darkness of our streets compared to the well-illuminated Japanese counterparts.

Moreover, I couldn’t help but notice the dearth of designated pedestrian crossings at road intersections in Windhoek. It seems as if pedestrians are not prioritized here, which stands in stark contrast to the meticulous attention given to pedestrian safety in Japan. In Japan, I observed a seamless system where, whenever cars and pedestrians intersected, the latter were consistently prioritized.

Could Namibia benefit from incorporating elements of this Japanese approach? Adding more designated pedestrian crossings and improving street lighting could be instrumental in enhancing safety on our streets.

Our streets could become safer and more pedestrian-friendly, contributing to a better quality of life for our community. Let’s consider these changes to make Windhoek a safer and more welcoming place for pedestrians.

  • Stop stewing, Start Doing

    October 22nd, 2023

In so many things that we do, there are seemingly a thousand distractions. It can be hard to get started and do the one thing, when there is just this little thing you need to finish before you get to the main thing you need to work on.

At these times, it can be helpful to have a few rules. If you have purposefully devised rules on how to act in these situations, it just might make the difference between progress and lack thereof.
